Abstract
A major step in intraocular lens (IOL) technology was the development of foldable IOL materials. One of the most successful innovations in IOL technology was the first hydrophobic foldable IOL material (Acrysof). This material has been the platform for more than 75 million implants worldwide. The advantages of this IOL were a smaller implantation incision (<3.5 mm) due to foldability and good centration as well as a low rate of posterior capsule opacification resulting from the material, haptic, and sharp posterior edge design of the IOL.
